The Match Book
Date
The Match Book is a coptic-bound artist book that documents a curated selection of vintage Georgia matchbooks sourced from the Match South collection. The work examines these objects as artifacts of regional commercial history, highlighting their typography, illustration, and early advertising methods.
Each matchbook is reproduced through clean, consistent imagery and paired with descriptive text, creating a visual system that mirrors archival cataloging practices. The book was designed with a controlled grid, restrained typesetting, and a deliberate emphasis on clarity and preservation.
Handbound using a traditional coptic stitch, the book opens fully to reveal full-spread photographs and uniform layouts. Its exposed binding, board covers, and textured materials underscore the physical craft at the center of the project.
This artist book functions as both a design study and an act of preservation, presenting everyday ephemera as meaningful records of local identity and mid-century visual culture.
